Sally Mann
Sally Mann is an American photographer, best known for her large black and white photographs, first of her young children, then of landscapes and lastly of dog’s bones.In spite of the controversy, the photos of her children are just photos of children made for their mother, but with an extra constituent, poetry. The Mann’s work is full in feeling, and also it is easy to note how each photo of her children has sometime that tell to viewers. Unfairly the ambiguity has been a factor that has allowed bad criticism on her work. Nonetheless, this ambiguity is not in Mann work, it is in the mind of the people that supposedly know about art, and can decide who is an artist and what art is.
Mann’s work could be defined how provocative or impudent, but it is not. Mann’s photography is just her life style, the way she conceives the world. People could say that Mann has taken advantage of her children, however for her children were just good models when she was trying to pick up something beauty to make pictures, just like happened whit the dog’s bones’ pictures.

ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that as the class progresses, you have come to see "poetry" or emotion as what makes art art--is my understanding correct? Would you say that Serrano's work also has poetry the way Mann's does?
I also enjoyed reading the part where you suggested that people who objected to Mann were revealing more about themselves than the artist. Could you elaborate on that at all? Also, Mann sees ambiguity as a good thing for an artist. Do you? It has seemed to get Mann in some trouble, for example.

May be sombody could say she has have her children,but the factor is that her photos surely have a sense of beauty.
I agee with you. I think these photos don't have bad intentions. In contrast, I like them. I think they are artistic, and with a lot of work in them. I like that they are in black and white, and also I like the landscape that gives them a special effect.

ReplyDeleteI agree with your view.Mann has been looking for the beauty from the deep inside of her heart. It is truth that we cannot to hid someething from reality.As for Mann's children, they are indeed the good models and their childhood was under a peaceful and freedom home. Big controversy has been mentioned that Mann's picture should be censored. Actually art is the fact of reality rather than the pretendance.

Probably I will have to define poetry such as the maximum expression of people feeling. I am not talking about it such as a metrical writing; however, I make allusion to this such as a way to produce an emotional response. In other words, I consider that art should have a background or explanation, which justifies it by itself. In this way, poetry will play a role in this justification.
On the other hand, I don’t know what to say about Serrano’s job because when you ask me about him, I immediately think in his photos about feces. Actually, I have not understood this particular job. Perhaps, he is playing with the ambiguity.
Yes, perhaps he is. I wounder, though, whether he has conceived too narrow a space for himself as an artist.
